Sierra Nevada, Andorra - which ski resorts can the Constitution Bridge go to?

Mobility restrictions due to the coronavirus make practicing this winter sport difficult right now. The ski resorts are very aware of the evolution of the pandemic and the effects it will have on the sector

Which ski resorts will open in December in Spain and in the rest of Europe

The latest restrictions to stop the advance of the coronavirus pandemic include perimeter closures of the autonomous communities, which makes it practically impossible to cross from one Spanish region to another if it is not with a labor or health justification. In winter, many people take the opportunity to go to Andorra or the Sierra Nevada to ski, although the season now hangs by a thread if the closures continue. This is the situation in the most popular areas for skiing.

Ski resorts in Catalonia

In Catalonia there are some ski resorts such as Baqueira Beret in the Arán Valley, Boí Taüll in Lérida, or La Molina in Gerona. In all of them the security protocols against Covid-19 are maintained and they intend to open, if allowed by the Ministry of Health, for the winter season, the most important campaign for the seasons.

At the moment Catalonia is closed, since the regional government imposed the perimeter closure until November 23 , so no one can enter or leave without justification. It is expected that from that date a de-escalation with four phases will begin, which will fully affect Christmas and will last until January, so at this time the possibility of going to a ski resort in Catalonia seems unlikely.

Cerler, Formigal, Candanchú and other stations in Aragon

Candanchú station, in the Aragonese Pyrenees , is also a good option for lovers of snow sports. However, the Official Gazette of Aragon published on November 4 new restrictions on mobility that go from the 6th to the 30th of November. This includes the perimeter closure of the entire community, which also makes it very difficult to go skiing in the north of Spain during these days. It is unknown what will happen after the deadline given by the government of the region, since they have not yet ruled on it.

Sierra Nevada, opening preparation with doubts

Sierra Nevada is one of the best known ski resorts and it welcomes many athletes every year. However, this year will be different due to Covid and even more so due to the restrictions imposed by the Junta de Andalucía . The perimeter closure was imposed on all the municipalities in the region, so not even the Andalusians themselves could go to the ski resort. At this time, the closure is effective until November 23, and it is pending that the Board meets to decide whether to relax these rules or tighten them.

In the case of Granada, the restrictions are even tougher than in the rest of the Andalusian territory, since all non-essential activities are closed, in which the ski resort must be included. Currently, Sierra Nevada is preparing for the new season that will begin in nine days, without knowing if it will be able to receive people. In the next few days the final decision of the regional government of Juanma Moreno will be known.

Andorra, the best option for skiing if they let you leave your community

Right now, the best option for those who want to ski is to travel to Andorra . The Principality has one of the highest rates of infections per 100,000 inhabitants, although the Government chaired by Xavier Espot confirmed that the closure of borders "is not an option", since the entire country is preparing to receive tourists and the fact that that preventing their arrival can mean the loss of more than 200 million euros.

At the moment, the measures that exist on the border of Spain with Andorra is the prohibition of driving from 10 pm to 6 am except for justified reasons. Likewise, in the interior of the Principality there are restrictions on hours in bars and restaurants, as well as the prohibition of meeting more than five people.

One of the best known stations is Grandvalira , which is scheduled to open on December 4. Andorra requires a PCR test for anyone who wants to stay in the country for more than four nights. However, it does not do so with the French and Spanish , due to the health agreements between these countries. Likewise, the trip to the ski resort can now be booked with a free cancellation, if the criteria in terms of restrictions change.

And in France can you ski?

At the moment, all the ski resorts in the French Pyrenees are closed due to the bad situation of the coronavirus. From November 30 to December 1, the French Government decided to return to strict confinement , with the closure of non-essential establishments, so at the moment the possibility of going to a ski resort is far away until further notice. At the moment there is no new information about what will happen in the month of December in the Gallic country.
